Aquarium gravel, also known as substrate, adds beauty to aquariums and is available in a range of colors and sizes, from small pebbles and sand to big river rocks. Beyond decoration, it does, however, serve a number of significant functions.

Substrate is any material used as the tank’s bottom layer, including aquarium gravel. Healthy water conditions are maintained by beneficial bacteria that live in the substrate of your aquarium and break down fish waste, leftover food, and plant debris.
